Amazon announced a few days back that it had picked up three new children’s series for it’s Prime Video streaming service with one of them being a Studio Ghibli production by the name of Ronja the Robber’s Daughter.
Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya its Japanese title, aired back in the Fall season of 2014 and largely went under the radar due to unavailability through legal streaming services. The series has since be licensed worldwide, excluding Japan and Scandinavia, by UK-based distributor Serious Lunch who have been looking for broadcasters for the series.
The most interesting aspect of this story though is the plans to produce an English language dub featuring The X-Files‘ Gillian Anderson as the series narrator.
Amazon’s Synopsis:
The daughter of a professional robber, Ronja realizes the complicated nature of her father’s profession when she befriends Birk, the child of a rival tribe. Ronja struggles to balance the relationship with her family and the bond with her self-proclaimed brother Birk as she comes to understand the intricate issues of family and friendship and how differences can be overcome with the help of love and understanding.
Ronja the Robber’s Daughter directed by Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea, From Up on Poppy Hill), son of iconic Studio Ghibli co-founder, is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video next year.
