Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #20 (April 18th 2021) Roundup

It’s issue #20 of Weekly Shonen Jump for 2021 so what better time to start a weekly roundup of all the series that currently run in the famed magazine. Series will be listed in the order they appear in a given issue and will be accompanied by a brief opinion of that chapter.

You can read all of the chapters listed below for free via the Shonen Jump app or website. Note that you can only read the first 3 chapters and the latest 3 chapters of a given series for free. You can access the rest of the chapters plus more series by subscribing for a monthly fee of £1.99/$1.99.

You can also read via the Manga Plus app or website. There’s no paid option so it’s entirely free with a lot of other series available in their entirety.

Issue #20 features a new series in Candy Flurry with accompanying colour pages, also receiving colour pages this week are Blue Box, Mashle and The Elusive Samurai. One Piece is absent this week.

Candy Flurry (Ame no Furu) Ch. 1

Candy Flurry is the newest series joining Shonen Jump this week and has an interesting premise but this chapter didn’t do much to get me excited. It relied too quickly on basic Shonen tropes for a first chapter so we’ll have to see how the story unfolds in the coming chapters.

Jujutsu Kaisen Ch. 146

I’m not even sure I follow what is going on in JJK right now. This culling game thing popped up out nowhere at the end of a chapter a while back, was not mentioned again and now it’s suddenly happening. I might have to go back and reread some chapters as I’m definitely lost at this point.

My Hero Academia Ch. 309

Bit of a weird chapter, it’s like it realised the story skipped ahead a touch then went back to kick it off proper. Bonus points however as Deku’s mum is always welcome and really grounds the fact that Deku is still a young hero who has come a long way.

Dr. Stone Ch. 193

This series has been a fantastic ride and the lead up to this chapter has been stellar. Can’t wait to see what comes next!

Black Clover Ch. 290

Good conclusion to that fight, I hope that’s actually the end of it. I want to see what the others are up to again at least for a little bit. I can imagine there’s going to be another twist to bring the fight back to the start though. We’ll see.

Blue Box Ch. 2

Blue Box continues with another great chapter. That art is so nice and works really well with the intense sports scenes. The turn at the end of the first chapter had me worried but for now, I’m at ease with it. Hopefully, it’ll only serve to push them both with their respective goals.

Undead Unluck Ch. 60

Interesting chapter, I feel it could have been made better if Shen’s backstory had been explored more in-depth. All the twists and turns in this series seem very last minute and at the whim of the author rather than planned out and intentional.

Highschool Family: Kokosei Kazoku Ch. 35

Another Ichiro centred chapter which I thought would start to get boring but seeing his hard work getting recognition is rather heartwarming.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles Ch. 59

Mash beating down powerful magic users what more do we expect. I imagine this fight will last a few chapters but I’m sure we’ll have a fair number of funny panels to chuckle at.

Witch Watch Ch. 11

This series features some nice art but zero personality. None of the characters are interesting and the forced comedy skits are embarrassing.

Sakamoto Days Ch. 20

Got some real Final Fantasy VII bike game vibes here mixed with some Matrix highway chase scene. Had some real good action and the introduction of a new character with very interesting powers, more Matrix vibes there too.

The Elusive Samurai Ch. 13

Probably my least favourite series in Jump right now. The art is so replusive and the story is mediocre at best. I have nothing else to say on this chapter.

Mission: Yozakura Family Ch. 79

Looks like Taiyo and the Yozakura’s will be dealing with Kawashita for some time to come as his past is revealed. I was ready to see his end in this chapter but now I feel he’ll make for a much more interesting villain than before going forward.

Me & Roboco Ch. 38

Decent chapter, has some Dragon Ball references. Bondo and Madoka got to spend some time together pretty much without interruption which is rare but also made for a very middle of the road chapter.

Magu-Chan: God of Destruction Ch. 40

Another boring chapter. I don’t know why I struggle with this series so much. It started out okay but has become so lackluster. I’m not even sure how to define it’s genre, it lacks any identity and doesn’t know what it wants to achieve.

Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin Ch. 39

Getting deeper into the backstory between Murofushi and Orpheus. I’m really liking this slow reveal while also keeping some info held back. Can’t wait to see how this unfolds in the coming chapters.

Ayakashi Triangle (Web-Only) Ch. 41

Doesn’t try and pretend to be anything other than pure fan service. This chapter was unashamedly that!

i tell c Ch. 12

After the ending of chapter 11, I was expecting some kind of time skip but it appears that didn’t happen and the story is progressing as normal. As such it’s more of the same, the premise is shaky at best and I can’t see this lasting long.

Nine Dragons’ Ball Parade Ch. 10

Good chapter but I feel the story has lost some of the momentum it had built up in previous chapters. Hopefully it’ll wrap this little story up and pick up the pace again.
