Unboxing: My Hero Academia Season One Limited Collector’s Edition

Welcome to latest anime unboxing here at Japan Curiosity, as usual, we have provided a selection of photographs of the release that will hopefully highlight some points of interest. We also have a video unboxing for you if you prefer.

So without further ado let’s get to the unboxing of My Hero Academia: Season One Limited Collector’s Edition DVD & Blu-ray Combo Pack from Funimation and distributed in the UK via Universal Pictures UK.

Now let’s get started, much like the Universal Collector’s Edition sets we have a detachable sleeve in this case on O-Card that slides over the rigid art box and can be kept attached to the set if you wish. The O-Card itself contains all the series information synopsis, technical details and certifications that you would expect meaning the box itself is free to feature some full artwork.

Held in place on the outside of the box by the O-Card is a student notebook which while a nice addition will not see any use from me. It’s too nice an item to be used for scribbling notes in so it’s a shame that it can’t be housed within the rigid box with the rest of the items. The O-Card does a decent job of holding the notebook in place though it is quite loose so be wary when moving it around.

So here with have the front and back covers which feature some really nice artwork covering the entire box. A nice touch is that the artwork is embossed which I didn’t notice with the cellophane on but really gives the set a premium feel. Then we have the spine with the series title and the other side which houses both the Blu-ray and DVD cases and an art book.

Next, up we have a very nice hard back cover limited edition art book featuring some fantastic character designs from the series. The overall quality of the art book is very high and the pages have a plastic texture which I definitely approve of.

Before we jump into the discs we have a keychain of main character Deku, Izuku Midoriya, which was found housed within the DVD case. The rattle it gave off while moving the box about did set some alarm bells ringing but thankfully it was just the keychain.

So next we have the DVD discs which interestingly are housed within a Blu-ray case, obviously to keep a uniform size to the set. We would normally see DVD sized cases housing both disc formats and I have to say I prefer this route as it’s more in keeping with my Blu-ray collection. Both the artwork on the cover and the discs are impressive and its great to see that Funimation has used as much artwork as they could within this set. The discs themselves have some text and logo’s on them but nothing like those of Universal’s discs so that is a plus.

We follow the same format with the Blu-ray case and discs albeit with different artwork. Notice there are 3 Blu-ray discs as opposed to only 2 DVD’s that’s due to the on-disc extras in this set being exclusive to the Blu-ray discs. The fact there is an additional disc solely for extras makes me happy as I’m always hankering for a good selection of extras, especially when it comes to Collector’s Editions and it doesn’t look like I will be disappointed here.

I think the My Hero Academia: Season One Limited Collector’s Edition DVD & Blu-ray Combo Pack from Funimation is definitely an impressive release of very high quality. The issue though comes in its pricing, when we initially reported on this release pre-order’s were priced at around £70/£75 a price many, myself including, felt extremely high. The price has since come down with the cheapest currently at £53.99 from Anime-On-Line with other retailers being slightly higher. While I think this is a great release and comes at the perfect time with the second season currently airing it’s still a little on the pricey side as far as similar Collector’s Editions go.

Well, that’s it from us here at Japan Curiosity we hope you enjoyed our unboxing of My Hero Academia: Season One Limited Collector’s Edition DVD & Blu-ray Combo Pack.
