Gundam Reconguista In G

Directed By : Yoshiyuki Tomino

Produced By : Sunrise

Genre : Action/Mecha/Sci-Fi/Space

Created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gundam franchise, Gundam Reconguista In G is the thirteenth series in the long running mecha metaseries and the first Gundam TV series to be written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino since Turn A Gundam back in 1999.

Gundam Reconguista In G is set in the Regild Century, following on from Universal Century. As an entirely new series, prior knowledge of anything Gundam is not really necessary, however your viewing pleasure will be enhanced with a little knowledge of the U.C timeline. The first thing that has probably grabbed most people’s attention with the promo art and trailers for Reconguista In G is it’s unique character designs, that are a departure from the Gundam standard. Some eagle eyed viewers may have even noticed the striking resemblance to Eureka Seven’s character designs and they wouldn’t be wrong, as Kenichi Yoshida has taken the reigns for the show’s designs.

It’s not just the character designs that have had a shake up this series, as the animation and art style step back to an age of traditional animation, with beautiful sequences that are simply amazing. While some may find the style outdated compared to that of recent anime series, it really sets itself apart and I for one, really love the style and the quality it brings, especially as some shows have been playing it safe lately and becoming quite bland and repetitive in terms of animation.

Because of the traditional style, the contrast between the normal animation and the CGI can be quite jarring at first. A worry for many people is how badly the CGI would stick out like a sore thumb and aside from its very first introduction, it doesn’t. In fact it becomes unnoticeable as the two animation styles blend together so well. Plus Sunrise are a safe pair of hands when its comes to CGI.

The story can be a bit of an issue when it comes to a Gundam series. Plot lines tend to be recycled and repackage, however so far this new series seems rather different and doesn’t feel like it will become completely over the top, like previous series such as SEED and 00 . Gundam Reconguista In G has a uniqueness to it that immediately sets it apart from previous series and with both Tomino and Yoshida involved in this venture expectations are running very high and they should. Fresh new life is being breathed into the Gundam franchise and as a long time fan of everything Gundam, its an exciting time.
